Camps and Science Enrichment Activities
Sierra Streams Institute is proud to offer opportunities for youth to engage in science and nature activities outside of the normal school day. We strive to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards by engaging all participants in activities that are inherently fun, hands-on, and place-based.
Join Sierra Streams Institute for a fun, 3-mile hike along the Tribute Trail. The event is for all ages and is a great opportunity to learn more about the area and spend an active day on one of Nevada City's most beautiful trails. Meet at the trailhead off of Champion Mine Rd. at 10 am.

Prelude for Yuba Salmon is a collaborative adventure in musicianship, composing, and environmental stewardship. Music in the Mountain's Young Composers Project will team with educators at Sierra Streams Institute (SSI) to take students through a curriculum focused on the plight of the salmon and their importance to the environmental health of the region's watershed. The curriculum will include both lab and field work. Students will then create a piece of music that responds to their experience.The project will culminate in a composition to be premiered by the MIM Festival Orchestra during the 2014 summer festival. The experience, inspiration and process will be captured in a 20-minute documentary film, where the music created will also serve as score for the film.

Students on a Salmon Tour on the Lower Yuba River
For the past ten years, Sierra Streams Institute has offered local students a full program of activities, including assemblies, science camps, and service learning days. Our recent enrichment activities include week-long day camps during school breaks and a summer camp program at Pioneer Park, provided in partnership with the City of Nevada City Parks and Recreation Department.
We also offered a two-day program at Lyman Gilmore, where 6th graders learned about the scientific principles of restoration, and then participated in restoration work. The students filmed the workday, and are creating a documentary of their experience for the SYRCL Wild and Scenic Film Festival.
We are assisting the Twin Ridges Elementary School District with development of a new environmental science center at the shuttered Malakoff School House, where we plan to offer activities that encourage sustainability, including solar energy and native plant gardens.
